Summer Hairsyles: How To Keep You Hair Healthy

Summer Hairsyles: How To Keep You Hair Healthy

If you are like me, summer is already taking a toll on your hair. I find myself looking in the mirror in awe of the split ends and dryed out locks.  I find myself mourning what used to be healthy, silky, soft hair that was all one shade.
But I am not going to have this ruin my summer softness. I want my husband to be able to run his fingers through my hair without the fear of making his finger bleed. It is time to fight back. It is time to bring back that lustre and shine.Summer doesn't have to ruin your hair entirely. After consulting with those in the know, I have found some simple steps to maintain my hair during the summer as well as salvage the hair I have left.

Get A Great Summer Style

This is my biggest mistake. I have the same winter duds. I did not even update the do in the spring so you can see how out of touch I am. It is important to start the season with a healthy do. Cut off all the dry ends and locate a summer style that is convenient for you. Summer styles can be long or short whichever you prefer. What makes a great cut is the dead ends removed, dried out layers adjusted and comfortability for the summer months.

Get a Quality Shampoo and Conditioner

There are great products available today at a variety of prices. There are several shampoos and conditioners on the market guaranteed to remove chlorine build-up from excess pool visits. For those with kids, I prefer the Loreal Swim and Sport Shampoo and Conditioner. There are several salons that offer their own brand name conditioning treatments and cleaning supplies. Another nonsalon option is Pantene's Daily Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. Talk with your stylist, tell them your summer schedule and pick a shampoo/conditioner that is right for you.

Protect Your Hair From The Sun

Sun can be more damaging than the chlorine in the pool. I am evidence of that today with my hair turning blonder by the second. The sun not only dries your hair, but it can damage the ends and bleach its color. Hats and swim caps are a great start, but you want to be able to show off that great cut. There are products today in the forms of Leave-In Conditioners and gels that offer sunscreen protection as well. As a side note, be aware that just because your head is covered with hair, it can still burn.

Schedule Conditioning Treatments

Most salons offer conditioning treatments that will restore your hair's natural lustre. You can also buy over the counter hot oil treatments that will do the same. Either way, have a treatment at least three times a month so that your hair continues to shine.

Protect Your Color

Again, I can not stress enough the dangers of the sun to your hair. The sun will fade your color quickly. There are options. You can add some lemon juice to your hair and enjoy being a blond for the season. If blond is not your style, then limit time out in the sun and protect your hair with hats and wraps.

Avoid Ponytails

Rubberbands and holders can cause your hair damage when pulled to tight. Use some cutesy clips instead, accessorize your hair with barettes and bows. Bring out the feminine side of you and save your hair at the same time.

Avoid Styling Products

The great thing about summer is that it is great to have free flowing hair as long as it looks healthy. So preserve the natural look and throw out the hair dryer, curling iron and rollers this summer. Avoid the gels, mousse, etc. that also can dry out your hair.

Follow these few suggestions and your hair will be looking summertastic in no time. This season make others at the pool ask how your hair stays so strong and healthy. Say goodbye to dry and brittle hair and say hello to hair so soft the love of your life can run his hands through it.
